First, you’ll travel to Arenal volcano, where you’ll watch one of the world’s most active volcanoes perform its nightly fireworks display. From there you’ll head for the hills of Monteverde. Some of nature’s best creations lie in Monteverde, home to a protected cloud forest and innumerable species of colorful tropical flora and fauna in a unique Quaker-founded village.
Things really get interesting when you are taken to the Corcovado area, in Costa Rica’s South Pacific Region; called by National Geographic as ¨one of the most biologically intense places on earth.¨ You’ll be tucked into a luxury eco lodge as one of Central America’s most primordial forests and all its wildlife surround you.
There will be plenty of time to explore the national park and the surrounding Caño Island, all for an unforgettable experience in paradise.
Itinerary
Day 1 - SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA .
Arrival at Juan Santamaria International Airport. A representative from Swiss Travel Service will meet and greet you upon arrival and will transfer you to the Melia Cariari Hotel. One night accommodation in standard room with breakfast included.
Day 2 - SAN JOSE – ARENAL VOLCANO .
Regular transfer (shuttle service) to La Fortuna, home of world-famous Arenal Volcano. One night lodging at the Montaña de Fuego Hotel in a deluxe room with breakfast included. Afternoon at leisure to relax or take optional excursions on your own, such as: trip to Arenal Volcano, horseback riding or a visit to the hot springs.
Day 3 - ARENAL VOLCANO - MONTEVERDE.
Early in the morning, transfer from Arenal to Monteverde, the latter of which is a village founded in 1951 by Quakers from Alabama, USA seeking a better place to live and maintain their traditional lifestyle. Over the years the colony has grown and some non-Quakers have settled here as well. Monteverde is a spectacular cloud forest, rich in tropical flora and fauna, which supports six distinct ecological communities of plants and animals with over 2,000 plant species and more than 320 species of birds, including the Quetzal with its metallic green feathers and golden highlights. Afternoon at leisure. Lodging for two nights at El Establo Hotel.
Day 4 - MONTEVERDE AREA.
After breakfast, take an exciting tour of Sky Walk, a network of suspension bridges and trails built within the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Sky Walk offers different observational levels to help you better admire the flora and fauna, starting at the forest floor and ending in the treetops. Overnight at El Establo Hotel.
Day 5 - MONTEVERDE - SAN JOSE.
Return to San Jose in our regular transfer (shuttle service). One night accommodation at Melia Cariari Hotel in a standard room with breakfast included. Day 6: SAN JOSE - CORCOVADO AREA, SOUTH PACIFIC Transfer from the hotel to the local airport to take a domestic flight from San Jose to Palmar Sur. Upon arrival you’ll take a combination land/boat transfer to Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge, your home for the next three nights. Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge, tucked away in the trees and cooled by the Pacific Ocean, is a 170-acre private reserve bordering Corcovado National Park. There are no roads to Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge; access is only by motor launch. Carefully designed and built by an American naturalist with over twenty-five year’s of local experience, this unique lodge offers accommodations constructed with the highest concern for conservation in harmony with the landscape and the environment. Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge provides the ideal base for your in-depth rainforest experience.
Days 7 - CORCOVADO AREA.
Tour of Corcovado National Park, located in the Pacific coast at the Osa Peninsula. The park protects eight different habitats and has the nation’s greatest wealth and variety of wildlife. The rain forest has a multitude of species, tall trees with spectacular buttresses, large vines and woody lianas, 285 species of birds, 139 species of mammals, 16 species of fresh water fish and 116 different types of reptiles and amphibians. Corcovado truly offers a visual smorgasbord of wildlife. Overnight at Casa Corcovado.
Day 8 - CORCOVADO AREA.
Tour of Caño Island Biological Reserve. This 740-acre island, 12 miles off the coast, rises 296 feet above sea level. Most of the island is covered by virgin tropical rainforests. The island at one time was an indigenous cemetery and later a pirate hideaway. Although the tombs have been looted, centuries-old, perfectly fashioned stone spheres remind you of their presence. You will find yourself surrounded by miniature beaches (each around 100 meters long) and crystal-like waters that allow you to explore the coral reefs. Overnight at Casa Corcovado.
Day 9 - CORCOVADO AREA - SAN JOSE.
Transfer by boat to take land transportation to the airstrip, where you will take a domestic flight back to San Jose. Upon arrival, you’ll transfer to Melia Cariari Hotel and have rest of the day at leisure. Lodging at Melia Cariari Hotel in standard room with breakfast included.
Day 10 - DEPARTURE DAY .
Transfer from Melia Cariari Hotel to Juan Santamaria International Airport. Departure from Costa Rica.
